Our Background & History

TANAFACO SEED MERCHANT LTD is a company registered in the Republic of Kenya through the registrar of companies. It was established on March 31, 2023, in Taita Taveta County for the purpose of providing sustainable production, marketing, and processing of certified seeds in Taita Taveta County.

Taveta Nafaka Farmers Community-Based Organization (TANAFA) started in 2014 and was registered with the Department of Social Services as a community-based organization (CBO). The group was registered to undertake the production, value addition, and marketing of green grams and groundnuts. It started with a membership of 32 members, which grew to 1285 in 2018.

Taitaveta Nafaka Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (TANAFACO) was formed in 2018 with the aim of bringing farmers together for the purpose of production and marketing of farm produce. In 2019, it was changed and registered as a cooperative to enable it to carry out business as a legal entity under the Cooperatives Society Act Cap 490 laws of Kenya, with a membership of 42 seed growers, 132 shareholders, and 3,200 members.

TANAFACO is a cooperative that aims to promote the production of certified drought-tolerant crops (DTC) seeds in Taita-Taveta County, Kenya. TANAFACO has been contracted by different seed breeders to multiply various crops, including sorghum, green grams, groundnuts, pigeon peas, and maize, using irrigation. Despite their efforts, the few certified DTC seed merchants face various challenges, including low parent seed availability, low financial capacity to expand production areas, low adoption of water conservation technologies, poor post-harvest handling leading to low-quality seed for sale, lack of proper packaging, and marketing. To address these issues, TANAFACO plans to acquire and install a DTC seed processing and packaging line and to develop a strong brand for their product.

TANAFACO’s objectives are:

1. To promote the production of grains and certified DTC seeds in partnership with seed breeders.
2. To facilitate access to extension services, quality inputs, and linkages to financial institutions to its members for increased productivity and use of adaptive production technologies.
3. To facilitate the aggregation of cereals from members and collective bargaining for better markets.

TANAFACO has been contracted by different cereal buyers and seed breeders to multiply drought tolerant crops (DTC) using irrigation in Taita-Taveta County, comprising (i) sorghum, (ii) green grams, (iii) groundnuts, (iv) pigeon peas, and (v) maize.

During the five years of its existence, we have supplied quality seeds and grains to its members and trained them on modern farming practices for cereals such as sorghum, finger millet, cowpeas, green grams, groundnuts, pearl millet, rice, and pigeon peas. The cooperative supplied Sorghum to East Africa Malting, Green grams to Pioneer agencies, Groundnuts, Green grams, and Sorghum seeds to the Egerton University seed unit.

In 2021, some of the cooperative members formed TANAFACO Seed Merchant Company Limited, which became fully registered under the company’s act in 2023.
